NEXT!!!!!
Ok, there’s still some backstory going on here!!!!
So far, beautiful blue veil tail male, a ruby red spade tail female, deep blue beaten up female spade tail!
All going well, we’ve settled into a routine. They have been upgraded to 20L with basic filter and heater ready for Aussie winter (which still hasn’t arrived π) anyways.....
Friend and I go to the aquarium place again to pick up some supplies for her and one of the boys wants to check out the guppy’s.......
This aquarium place is currently doing an upgrade on their Betta stand, omg there’s hardly anything there..... most has been sold thankfully.
What is left is in tiny maybe 500ml containers. There’s some really really small ones and they look quite snug in their containers, the. There’s this huge boy, big tail, it was pretty dark in the corner we were in so we used our phone torch, very carefully so not to stun him and try to get a good look at him..... π³π³π³....... omg he’s huge, he’s stunning, his colours remind me of an oil slick on the ocean..... never have a I seen a colour like this.
I can’t leave him there in that tiny container, he’s waaaay out of my budget but hey!!!!
We get him home, get him settled. He’s just stunning, very timid, very very shy. Not interested in interacting at all. Will eat once I walk away and watch him from a distance, we respect that and give him time.
When I first bring my Betta fish home, I don’t know their story so far.
Have they been raised in huge grow out ponds and pretty much fend for themselves, are they raised in controlled environments and monitored closely π€·♀️
All we can do is respect them and do our best to give them their best lives.
I start them in a 5 L bowl, yes a bowl!!!!!
They have just come out of a tiny container and who knows exactly how long they have been in there for, so a bowl is a pretty good upgrade to quarantine them in.
After a few weeks to a month they get moved to their permanent 20L tanks that are planted with nice substrate, a snail and sometimes some tetras.
So.... we are up to 4 bettas!!!
I’m looking on the market place and see this tank for sale $50!!!!!
Mmmmmm... well off I go to pick it up.
Once home I give it a scrub, make sure it’s water tight and leave it out in the sun for a few days. I also dig out my old trusty 80L tank and give that a good clean up.
So that’s 4 functional tanks with fish and 2 bigger tanks being cleaned..... from December 2019 to early February 2020....
Can you see where this is going π
So I’m still researching Betta breeding to get a really good idea what I’d be in for IF I decided to hurtle down this path. Mmmmmm does gathering supplies count as research lol
I’m also looking at great tank mates and researching fish that will harmoniously ish together.
The goal is to breed my own female betta sorority I’ve decided, if they fight in a bag on the way home from the store and then can’t be housed again in the same tank it’s probably not a good idea to try that again. Besides the coronavirus is just starting to hit world news and we are hurtling towards a lock down so what better time to start a long term project when there’s no idea what tomorrow will bring.
I’ve set up the breeder tank...... the blue fella and Ruby have been sitting next to each other for a week uncovered now, his bubble nest is beautiful, she has breeding stripes and looks full to the brim with eggs.
I put him in the breeder tank about the end of February, I put her in a breeder box within his tank.
Water perameters are good, Indian almond leaf in place, some nice floating lettuce plant and other plants for for her to hide around are all there.
Everything looks good.
She is trying to jump out of the breeder box and flirting is really really kicking off!!!
